Their 2013 Opus One (WWB, 96) needs a bit of time in the cellar to fully come together but I was amazed how great the 2015 Opus One (WWB, 98) showed in its hedonistic youth. Blue fruit tones were found in that wine as well as their 2007 Opus One (WWB, 98) which is utterly captivating at the twelve year mark. The 2008 Opus One (WWB, 98) was a stunning effort that is marvelous now but has a long life ahead of it in the cellar. I was fortunate enough to try several older vintages in the past few months and I have included my tasting notes from those settings. Head winemaker Michael Silacci has been at the helm since 2001 and crafts an extraordinary wine. Their estate includes part of the famed To-Kalon Vineyard, as well as other Oakville vineyards. Opus produces only one wine and a second wine (Overture) – both of which are typically a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Opus One was started in 1979 as a partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild and became the first ultra-premium California wine to be sold in France and Internationally. It was a gorgeous day and setting to taste their absolutely scintillating new release wines.

A few weeks go I had the great opportunity to visit one of the iconic wineries of the world, Opus One.
